The Origin Story

He wasn't a chemist. He was just a father who didn't want chemicals around his family.

In the early 1990s, Tor & Kathryn McPartland accidentally built their passive solar home in Carmel Valley, CA on top of an ant farm. Instead of reaching for the exterminator's number, Tor started researching.

He found d-Limonene — the natural oil inside orange peels — and formulated something that actually worked. No lab. No corporate backing. No chemistry degree. Just a problem that needed solving, and a man determined to do it without compromising his family or his land.

Can Orange Guard really be used in my kitchen around my food?

Yes. This is one of the things that makes OG genuinely different. The active ingredient, d-Limonene, is on the FDA's GRAS list (Generally Regarded As Safe). That means it's food-grade and can be sprayed in your pantry, under your cabinets, around your appliances, and along your countertops without worry. Just let it dry before putting food back.

Can I use it around my pets and kids?

Yes, when used as directed on the label. OG may be used around food, humans, and pets, as the formula is water-based, 100% biodegradable, and contains no synthetic chemicals or nerve agents. We do recommend keeping pets out of treated areas while the spray is still wet and allowing it to dry fully before letting them back into the space because they might not like the taste.

What pests does Orange Guard control?

OG kills and repels ants, cockroaches, fleas, silverfish, palmettos, aphids, and variety of hidden bugs. It works on contact, meaning it kills bugs the moment it touches them, and continues repelling for weeks after application. For fire ants specifically, we have a dedicated Fire Ant Control formula registered in 16 states.

How long does it last after application?

OG works as both a contact insecticide and a residual repellent. After the initial kill, it keeps repelling insects for several weeks before fully biodegrading. For best results, reapply every 4–6 weeks or after heavy rain for outdoor use. The fresh orange scent fades within a few hours but the repelling effect continues.

Can it be used outdoors and in the garden?

Absolutely. Our Home Pest Control can be sprayed around the perimeter of your home, along doorways, window frames, and any cracks or entry points.

For gardens, our Ornamental product is specifically designed to protect plants from aphids, whiteflies, mites, and other garden pests — and unlike conventional pesticides, it actually attracts pollinators rather than harming them.
